What is a NavStation and why do I need one?

A navstation is a widely-used term for any kind of multifunctional integrated navigation system for sail and power boats that combines some or all of the following functions:  GPS chartplotter, radar, echo sounder or fish finder and AIS. Some navstations can also exchange information with external devices such as the autopilot, performance and weather instruments, engine data  outputs, video camera and DVD player, making them extremely flexible and practical pieces of equipment.

Examples include the Simrad NX40 and Simrad NX45, which feature 8.4-inch and 12.1-inch screens respectively. High-resolution colour displays, which can toggle between the various system functions at the touch of a button, are viewable even in strong sunlight and incorporate powerful backlighting and bonding technology to eliminate the chance of condensation forming inside the glass.

The high performance chartplotter at the heart of a Simrad navstation enable users to plan their sailing course waypoint by waypoint and zoom in to view as much detail as they need, providing a higher level of safety - especially at speed. The NX40 and NX45 can be used either as stand-alone navigation devices or as integrated systems providing information on GPS, chartplotting, radar, fish finding and engine data on a split-screen display if required. The built-in echo sounder can double as a fish finder with the addition of a transducer, but sailors who don't need a fish-finding capability can add depth, speed and temperature gauges instead.

A navstation is a one-stop solution for boat owners who want full navigation functionality in a compact and cost-effective format.  These integrated systems are an asset to every boat in all conditions, supplying the navigator with all the nformation he needs to find a safe path through his cruising waters.
